# Why AI Readiness Matters Now

## The next step is practical adoption.

Statistics Canada reported that **19.2% of Canadian businesses** used AI to produce goods or deliver services during the 12 months before its second-quarter 2026 survey. The federal government has set a target of **60% business adoption by 2034**.

Those figures describe different things: recent use and a future target. They point to growing interest, but they do not tell any one organization what to do. That decision starts with the work, the people, and the risks in your setting.

Three principles guide my approach: trust before tools, usefulness before rollout, and data control before scale.

## The numbers are context, not a plan

The adoption figures can help frame a discussion with leadership. They cannot identify the right use case, prove a return for your organization, or replace a review of your data and governance.

**Sources:** adoption figures from [Statistics Canada, Canadian Survey on Business Conditions, second quarter 2026](https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/11-621-m/11-621-m2026010-eng.htm) (published 11 June 2026), the last quarter that asked about AI use in the past year. Statistics Canada ended the survey with its third-quarter 2026 release (31 August 2026), which asked only about planned use. The 60% adoption target from [*AI for All: Canada's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy*](https://ised-isde.canada.ca/site/ised/en/node/1046), Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, launched 4 June 2026. ## Principle 01: Build trust before choosing tools

People need to know what an AI tool can do, what it cannot do, and how their information will be handled. A useful first step is to agree on what staff may enter, when a person must review an output, and how to raise concerns.

### What this can mean for your organization

- Review data sensitivity and existing privacy or records rules.
- Identify decisions that should remain with people.
- Set practical guidance your staff can understand and follow.

### How the work shows up here

The AI Readiness Assessment can help document current practices and identify questions for your leadership team. Any policy or compliance advice should be reviewed by the appropriate legal, privacy, or governance professionals.

---

## Principle 02: Prove usefulness before expanding

Start with a task people do often. Compare the current process with a small, supported trial. Look at time, quality, errors, and whether people would choose to use the new process again.

### How the work shows up here

The assessment helps identify candidate workflows. A redesign project can then test one workflow with your team before you invest in a wider rollout.

---

## Principle 03: Decide how data will be controlled

Before choosing a tool, decide what information it will handle, where that information may be processed or stored, who can access it, and what happens if the vendor relationship ends.

For Northern and Indigenous organizations, those choices should be led by the organization's own governance and data requirements. The right design may use different infrastructure for different classes of data. It should not assume that one platform fits every need.

Where OCAP® is relevant, confirm the organization's interpretation and application of the principles with the appropriate rights holders and governance bodies. The full framework is published in the [Data Sovereignty & AI whitepaper](/resources/data-sovereignty-ai).

## What this means for different organizations

The principles are the same for everyone. What they mean day to day depends on what you do, who you serve, and where you sit.

### Small business and mid-market

Identify a recurring task where time is being lost. Estimate the current effort, test a practical change, and keep track of whether it helps. The [AI ROI Calculator](/resources/ai-roi-workflows) is a place to start.

### Education

Give staff and students clear guidance that fits your institution. Review administrative use cases and policy needs with the people responsible for teaching, privacy, and student wellbeing. The [AI Policy Guardrails template](/resources/ai-policy-guardrails) can help you draft.

### Public organizations

Review records, procurement, privacy, and oversight requirements before piloting. Get qualified advice on any legal or regulatory duties that apply.

### Northern and Indigenous organizations

Let your own governance shape decisions about tools, data, infrastructure, and timing. Build capacity within the organization as part of the work. The [Data Sovereignty & AI framework](/resources/data-sovereignty-ai) can help put those decisions in front of your governing body.
